Coffee Machine Temperature Control with NTC Thermistor Probes

The Importance of Water Temperature in Coffee Brewing

Brewing coffee is highly dependent on water temperature, as the temperature of the water can significantly affect the taste of the coffee. Generally, coffee machines operate at a water temperature of around 90°C to 95°C, which is considered optimal for extracting the best flavor from coffee grounds. As coffee machines transition from office to home, they reflect the increasing pursuit of quality in daily life. To maintain a consistent temperature, coffee machines rely on the temperature control function of NTC Thermistor Probes. Here’s a detailed explanation:

Understanding the Working Principles of NTC Thermistor Probes

NTC Thermometer Probes (Negative Temperature Coefficient) are temperature sensors whose resistance changes with temperature. Specifically, the resistance of an NTC Thermometer Probe decreases as the temperature increases and increases as the temperature decreases. This characteristic makes NTC Thermometer Probes highly sensitive to temperature changes.

NTC Thermistor Probes comprise NTC thermistor chips, probes (such as metal or plastic housings, epoxy or glass encapsulation), electronic wires, and terminal connectors.

Application of NTC Thermistor Probes in Coffee Machines

Coffee machines typically have three Probes located at the outlet of the instant heater, the position for measuring the brewing water tank temperature, and the position for sensing the inlet water temperature at the dispensing head. Here’s how temperature control works in coffee machines:

1. Water Temperature Monitoring:

NTC Thermistor Probes are installed at the coffee machine’s outlet, brewing water tank, and inlet positions to monitor the water temperature at these points and ensure that it remains within the set range.

2. Maintaining a Constant Temperature:

Coffee machines require the outlet water temperature to be maintained at around 90°C. NTC Thermistor Probes can keep the water temperature constant at the set value during operation. If the water temperature drops, the sensor detects the change and the control system adjusts the heating system to maintain the temperature.

3. Fault Diagnosis and Safety Protection:

When a coffee machine operates for extended periods, the motor and heating elements generate heat. If the temperature becomes too high, the NTC Thermistor Probes send this abnormal data to the control system, which can then determine if there is a fault with the components. By analyzing the sensor readings, issues can be quickly identified and appropriate measures taken.

4. Energy Saving:

NTC Thermistor Probes also contribute to energy efficiency in coffee machines. The heating system is activated only when the water outlet switch is turned on. When water is not needed, the machine can switch to an energy-saving mode. This not only conserves energy but also extends the lifespan of the coffee machine.

Conclusion

To meet the stringent temperature control requirements of coffee machines, Exsense has developed high-conductivity, waterproof, and fast-response NTC Thermistor Probes. This thermistor plays a crucial role in coffee machines, including water temperature monitoring, maintaining a constant temperature, diagnosing faults, and saving energy. It enhances coffee quality while ensuring the safety of the usage process.
